yes it does. There is a ton of research on writing especially in times of mourning. It is very helpful.
References :
http://pyxlin.com

Yes, you can put your thoughts into better order if you have to focus on them to write them down. Furthermore, you can go back and review things you thought / wrote days or years ago and see how you've developed - or not.
References :
I've been writing my woes into a journal since grade 3, I am now in grade 10. I love looking back on my naivety, it's like reading Anne Frank when your 12, totally siding with Anne and then re-reading it when your 16, feeling sorry for her parents.

Whether I was frustrated or angry, inspired or just jotting down my daily goings-ons I would pour my heart out and I always feel better. I don't write in it as much as I used to, maybe because I don't need it so much anymore.

I definitely think writing in a journal aids in personal development.

But, do your own homework next time.

Possibly, it depends on the person. Keep in mind the most common trait in serial killers and the mentally unstable is journals. It can be if you have sound judgment, but if you have anger problems or have tendencies leaning towards depression, it can possibly increase these traits. If you believe you are in a solid state of self-acceptance, go right ahead.
References :
Yes, because you can look back at it and see if you are heading towards your goals in life or if you have allowed yourself to be sidetracked. It helps to write things down so it is more concrete. Give it a shot and see what happens!
References :
I think so. It helps you vent your thoughts and feelings and you can also learn more about yourself by reading it.
