Time Management and Time Coding
I’m going to introduce you to some concepts about time and how we all experience it differently.
But before I do, I’d like you to think of an event in the past, a specific event and imagine it for a moment, conceptually where it is space — if you were to point to the past where would it be?
Now think about an event out in the future — where would you point if pointing to the future?
And the now?
There really is no right or wrong — we all have out own unique way of coding time and even if it isn’t obvious at first I suspect as you think about this over the hours ahead you’ll become much clearer on your own coding.
But for now, lets have a look at two distinct way of coding time “in time ” and “through time”
Classic in time
You time-line goes through your body — this is most commonly shown as past behind, future in front — but I’ve come across many different forms:
• Classic front to back
• Back to front
• Curved
• Spiral
• Circular
• Vertical
• The key distinguishing factor being that the timeline passes through the body and now is inside!
Classic though-time in the western world is a line passing in front of the person past on left, future out on the right, but again there are many variations
• Reversed
• Vertical
• Curved
• Etc.
• The key distinguishing feature being that the line is out side of the person — they are dissociated from now and it is outside of them
So how does this affect time-management
In time people will tend to be:
• ociated into the now
• Feel like you have no real sense of time
• Something tomorrow can feel very similar to something next week
• You may tend not to like planning
• If you are busy on something you may lose all sense of the passage of time
• You will tend to have ociated memories that is you will be looking through your own eyes.
• You may often leave things until the last minute
• One of the key things to be aware of is how you perceive things out in the future (or back in the past)
• If you have three things out in the future they can all seem to merge/ obscure each other and may feel all together. Also depending on the length of your perceived timeline overwhelming (as if they are all need doing now, or so far away as to be unimportant
Classic though time people will still experience differences depending on the length of their perceived timeline but the event are separate in their minds eye — so they can plan much more easily.
These people tend to be the people who design time-management systems — these often work really well for fellow through timers but can be next to useless to in-timers who don’t have the same coding.
In-timers can still be very effective but they need to set up systems to keep them on track — often the best approach is to experiment with developing your flexibility to operate with a through-time line when you are planning.
Though timer tend to organised and have plans that are arranged by time — and they follow them
If you’re a through timer and find yourself procrastinating — then get a good time management system and use it.
If that doesn’t work check out if you really want what you’re working towards or if you are blocked for some other reason.
In timers can be very productive but often hate being tied to rigid systems and time management systems. So why follow one?
First get clear on what is really important to you and why because the more important it is the easier it is to find a way to achieve it. I have a friend who told me that some of her most organised friends are in timers who hate being under pressure so this value forces them to keep organised)
That will work in the short term but personally that sounds like hard work and I’d recommend a finding a enjoyable reason if you can).
Also recognise your natural patterns and set aside “prime time” slots of about 90 minutes away from all distractions and work towards a specific objective.
As you can probably tell this is my pattern and I used these slots to knuckle down and write over a years worth of daily tips.
I also found that using a stop down timer really helped put some pressure on me for these slots, I used to use a flash little electronic timer but now I’ve found a little plastic chicken egg timer works just as well,
